End of January? Don’t Worry! How to Kickstart Your Writing Goals for 2025
It’s the end of January, and maybe your writing goals haven’t gotten off the ground yet. If I’m honest, I know exactly how you feel. I had flu for three weeks over Christmas, and for the whole of January, I feel like I’ve been trying to catch up to no avail. It’s been really frustrating but it’s so important not to let it stop you from making progress.
If you’ve found yourself still stuck in the planning phase, have no plans at all, or are struggling to find the time and energy to write, you’re not alone. It’s easy to feel behind when everyone around you seems to be setting ambitious New Year’s resolutions and knocking them out of the park. But here’s the truth: New Year’s resolutions are overrated – you’re never too late to start.
2025 is still full of possibilities, and there’s plenty of time to get back on track with your writing and your business. Whether you’re planning to write a book, create a course, or tackle a new content project, it’s all about taking action and setting realistic goals that work for you.
Here’s how you can kickstart your writing goals and make 2025 your most productive year yet:
1. Start Small, Think Big
Instead of aiming for lofty, all-encompassing goals right out of the gate, break your writing goals into smaller, achievable tasks. Start with manageable steps, like dedicating 15 minutes a day to writing or creating an outline for your project. As you build momentum, you can gradually increase your writing time or expand your scope. It’s about consistency over perfection.
2. Revisit Your ‘Why’
It’s easy to lose sight of your motivation, especially if life gets in the way. Reconnect with why you want to write in the first place. Whether it’s to share your knowledge, grow your business, or create a lasting legacy, remembering your ‘why’ will reignite the passion behind your writing. Write it down and keep it visible to remind yourself that your goals matter.
3. Set SMART Goals for 2025
A common reason for not reaching writing goals is setting them too vaguely. Instead of simply saying, “I want to write a book this year,” get specific. Use the SMART framework—make your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, “I will write 1,000 words per week for the next 10 weeks” is clear and actionable. SMART goals will help you stay focused and motivated.
4. Create a Writing Schedule
If finding time to write has been your biggest hurdle, it’s time to schedule it into your day like any other important task. Even if you only have 30 minutes a few times a week, those small writing sessions can add up over time. Consistency is key, and once it becomes a habit, you’ll find that writing doesn’t feel like a chore but a part of your routine.
5. Accountability and Support
One of the best ways to stay on track is by having someone to hold you accountable. Whether it’s a writing buddy, a coach, or a mentor, having someone check in on your progress can keep you motivated and help you push through any obstacles. If you don’t have someone in your life right now, consider joining a writing group or seeking out professional coaching. You don’t have to do this alone.
2025 Can Still Be Your Year!
The end of January doesn’t have to mean the end of your writing goals for the year. Remember, it’s never too late to start, and the key to success is getting back on track, no matter where you are. Set realistic, specific goals, create a schedule, and surround yourself with support to ensure you’re consistently moving forward.
What’s one thing you can do today to get closer to your writing goals? Whether it’s setting a deadline or carving out time in your calendar, make it happen. 2025 is yours to make!
Much love, Janet XOXO
